On the 15th November, eleven students from Tennant Creek High School for the very first time participated in the First LEGO League (FLL) Into Orbit Challenge at Centralian Middle School. FLL is an international event with 300,000 participating students from 80 countries. The challenge consists of three parts, core values, robot game and the project. It challenges students to think like scientists and engineers. Our students had to build, test and program an autonomous robot using LEGO EV3 MINDSTORMS technology to solve a set of missions in the robot game. The students have presented a high level of gracious professionalism and teamwork. There were a lot of ‘blood’, sweat and tears behind the scene. The students and the coaches spent about 12 hours of school time and hundreds of hours working on the robot missions on weeknights and weekends. The dedication and persistence of the students were extraordinary. All the hard work paid off. Tennant Creek High School students won the Robot Design Award! We are proud of our achievements. After the challenge, the team reflected on how we could modify and improve on the prototype, making it more legendary in 2019.
